Description of the organisation

The Consorzio Catania Ricerche has been operating since May 1987 and it actually belong to the network of City Research Consortia - industrial liaison centres for Italian Universities promote by IRI (Italian Industrial State Holding). The network of the City Research interest Consortia (Milan, Genoa, Venice, Pise, Padua, Rome, Naples and Catania) links the research interests of Universities and firms in order to develop the skills and knowledge toward the introduction of new and innovative technologies from the laboratories to the market place.

Consorzio Catania Ricerche is a no profit Institute, among Public Institutions, such as CNR (National Council of Research Centre), IRI (Italian Industrial State Holding), Catania University, Catania Trade Chamber and local industries (SGS Microelectronics). Later, other research centres, such as INFN (Nuclear Physics National Institute), and other local industries (i.e. AID Agricolture Industrial Development SpA, SIFI Pharmaceutical Industry SpA and ELMEC SpA) joined the Consortium.

Activities

The Consorzio Catania Ricerche operates as a link among public bodies (University of Catania, C.N.R. (National Council of Research), IRI, INFN (Nat.l Institute of Nuclear Physics), (Chamber of Commerce) and innovative local Companies as ST-Microelectronics, AID-Agriculture Industrial Development, SIFI-Pharmaceutics, ELMEC-Elettromecanic.

Cultural activities

The activities of the Consorzio Catania Ricerche cover many fields such as: Agroindustry, Environment, Cultural Heritage, Biotechnology and their applications in chemical, medical and agricultural fields, Fine and pharmaceutical Chemistry , Electromechanical, Microelectronics, Informatics , Quality(certifications and testing), Materials, Surfaces and solid Interfaces (Materials for Electronics and Optoelectronics, Biocompatible Materials, Surface Coatings, Plastics for Food packaging, Cutting tools).

The aims of the Consortium is to transfer technological know-how between the University and Industry and to provide Sicily with high technological research and production centre within which University Institutions, State-owned research Institutions and Industry-owned Research Centre coexist and cooperate with technologically competitive large industry as well as with small and medium enterprises.
